Prosecutors and judges told legislators last week that minor traffic offenses should remain on the criminal law books despite a recommendation to turn them into mere civil violations as a way to trim court case loads and save government money.

The comments came during a discussion of an idea floated by the criminal justice reform council whose work prompted the General Assembly this year to pass a host of changes, such as easing drug laws, as a way to cut prison costs.
