A Gwinnett lawsuit that names the county’s Chamber of Commerce as a defendant could clarify to what extent private organizations receiving government money are obligated to open up their records to public inspection.

Plaintiff Sabrina Smith, chairwoman of Citizens for Responsible Government, sued Nov. 16 after the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce refused to comply with an open records request filed in February. She’s seeking documents showing how $650,000 the chamber received from the Gwinnett County government and school system was spent. She wants to know if it was illegally used for advocacy against charter schools and for transportation sales tax ballot measures.
