The state Court of Appeals has reversed a $2 million verdict against Gwinnett County that was awarded to the widow of a man killed by a county police officer who was speeding. The court found that the county did not waive its statutory maximum waiver of sovereign immunity of $100,000 because it set aside more money than that in an auto-wreck liability fund.

"This case is important to cities and counties across the state," said Michael A. O’Quinn, a McDonough attorney who represents Gwinnett County. "It gives them assurance their maximum exposure is what the statute says."
