Fisher & Phillips managing partner Roger Quillen said 2012 was the busiest year on record for the labor and employment firm, and he forecast an even heavier workload for 2013. “Our profits per partner were up across the board,” said Quillen. “On a per-lawyer basis, our lawyers were the most productive they’ve been at any time since I’ve been managing partner, and for any time before that that I have records for.” The firm opened two new offices last year, in Boston and Memphis. A Columbus, Ohio, branch that opened in January 2013 brings the firm’s total to 28 offices. Quillen said several factors helped spur the firm’s successful year, including a continued emphasis on regulatory and enforcement coming out of Washington, renewed organizing vigor on the part of private-sector labor unions and a welter of immigration laws emerging from statehouses across the country. Given the likelihood of bipartisan immigration reform coming from Congress and the White House, Quillen said the firm’s immigration practice—which doubled in 2012—may see a similar leap in the coming year. “If we had any disappointment last year, it was in our head count,” said Quillen, who had hoped to add a minimum of 25 new attorneys in 2012, but instead saw the firm grow by 19 lawyers.
