Ford & Harrison, which has re-branded itself as FordHarrison, reported a modest decline in growth after a strong 2011 as the labor and employment firm adapts to ongoing rate pressures by investing in technology, using more alternative fees and staffing matters more efficiently. “It’s a tough transition, especially since so much of our work is a one-off deal,” said managing partner C. Lash Harrison. FordHarrison handles big engagements, such as restructuring labor contracts for airlines—which included a lot of work last year on the American Airlines bankruptcy—but many of its matters are individual employment contracts. Billings were up, said Harrison—noting that employment litigation has increased because the Obama administration has “taken a much more aggressive approach to enforcement”—but “rate pressures are tremendous.”
