About a dozen members have resigned from the Georgia Association for Women Lawyers in the last two weeks, including the group’s past president, Lindsay Verity. The action is in response to the GAWL board’s decision not to sign on to an amicus brief supporting same-sex marriage in the California Proposition 8 case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Fifty-six members signed an April 10 letter from GAWL’s public affairs committee and feminist affinity group expressing disappointment with the decision.

The GAWL board decided in February not to sign the brief to avoid this very situation, choosing not to take a position on a controversial issue that could cause dissension among its approximately 750 members.
