A trucking company that admitted its driver caused a fatal accident said that the $1.2 million a Florida jury found it should pay the victim’s mother was “excessive and beyond any reasonable compensation.”
The company had offered to settle the case for $250,000 just prior to trial, said one of the plaintiff’s lawyers, Sean McEvoy of Atlanta’s Fried Rogers Goldberg. He described the case as tricky because the court would not allow the lawyers to provide any details about the accident in which a tractor-trailer crashed into the car carrying 65-year-old Dennis Brown, who had spent most of his life in state institutions because he had Down syndrome.
