A few years ago, Ms. Jones (a pseudonym), a senior citizen living in rural west Georgia, fell on difficult financial times after her husband died and her own health declined. She could no longer work full time, but found a part-time job to supplement her small Social Security benefit.

She and her husband had taken out a small loan before his death, but as her own situation worsened, Ms. Jones could no longer make the full payments. A debt collector sued her, but when she received the suit, she didn’t know what to do. She didn’t know the law and failed to file an answer to the suit, resulting in a default judgment against her.
