A Carroll County jury delivered a defense verdict to a father who wept on the stand as he admitted handing his car keys to a 16-year-old girl who proceeded to text while driving before crashing into a pole.

The girl’s mother had sued the man for negligence and breach of contract, seeking to recover tens of thousands of dollars in medical costs for the girl. Two other girls, including the man’s daughter, were in the car as well but were not injured seriously.
