The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday attempted to clarify the rules on lawsuits over unsatisfied liens but indicated the state Legislature should make things even clearer.

The issue was the deadline for filing a lawsuit over an unsatisfied lien. The unanimous court sided with a hospital that said it acted in time to sue an automobile insurer over an injured driver’s unpaid medical bills. Three of the seven justices suggested in a concurring opinion that, notwithstanding the guidance provided by the court on Monday, the statute at issue will remain difficult to apply until the Legislature revises it.
