The former leader of a defunct Hindu temple has been charged with 32 counts of fraud and obstructing justice by a federal grand jury in Atlanta, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia announced Friday.

Annamalai Annamalai, also known as Dr. Commander Selvan, “exploited his position as a leader and spiritual adviser to enrich himself by fleecing the people who trusted him with their most personal information,” said Veronica Hyman-Pillot, special agent in charge of the IRS criminal investigation division in Atlanta.
