I heard a news story on the radio this week that in some ways paralleled this annual Going Rate issue. If you were in the market for a coffee maker, the reporter noted, you easily could shop online to make your choice. A quick Google or Amazon search, and you could compare brands by price, function and even customer reviews.

But if you need to have a medical procedure—as an example, a tonsillectomy—you’d be on your own to find the right surgeon, and almost certainly any information you found would not include the sticker price that particular doctor charges for that specific surgery.
