A federal grand jury has indicted the former special agent in charge of the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Atlanta, the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia announced Thursday.

Herschell Harvell Jr., 53, of Conyers, was indicted on charges that he made false statements to a bank to obtain a mortgage loan and conspired to obstruct an investigation of his real estate transactions, said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.
