After North Carolina voters approved a referendum banning same-sex marriages in 2012, Attorney General Roy Cooper II found himself in a tricky position politically and personally.
Cooper, a Democrat who publicly supports same-sex marriage and opposed the constitutional amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman, is now defending the state law against legal challenges.
