Seven years after two teenage boys were killed when the stolen car in which they were passengers slammed into a tree, with a Clayton County police cruiser in pursuit, the county has settled the resulting wrongful death actions for more than $2 million.

The Georgia Court of Appeals paved the way for the settlement last year when it ruled that Georgia law protecting police officers from suit arising from the death or injury of a fleeing suspect during a chase did not offer the same immunity in the case of innocent third parties injured in part by “reckless disregard of proper police procedure.”
