A father who pleaded guilty to battery that caused permanent brain damage to his 8-week-old baby has been sentenced to 30 years, 20 to serve in prison and the rest on probation, Cobb District Attorney Vic Reynolds announced.

Joseph Rucker McFall, 31, of Austell, pleaded guilty on Thursday to five counts of aggravated battery against the child and admitted he inflicted blunt-force injuries to the child’s head and broke both of the baby’s arms and a rib in 2012, the announcement said. The child’s mother—who has since divorced the father—told the court her baby, now 20 months old, suffers from blindness and will never be able to walk, talk or care for himself. McFall told Judge James Bodiford that the injuries were accidental.
