Georgia Court of Appeals Judge Michael Boggs became the unwilling star of Tuesday’s Senate confirmation hearing for Georgia’s seven federal judicial nominees as he publicly disavowed his most conservative—and controversial—stances as a Georgia legislator.

Boggs also fielded criticism from members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who said he lacked candor in providing information about his support of bills backing the Confederate battle flag, abortion restrictions and a ban on same-sex marriage that appealed to his south Georgia constituency but are largely anathema to Democrats.
