The DeKalb County district attorney’s office launched its prosecution of suspended county CEO Burrell Ellis on Tuesday by painting him as an authority figure consumed by his own ego and greed.
Assistant District Attorney Lawanda Hodges began her opening statements with three words: “Power. Punishment. Perjury.” They became her refrain as she told jurors that evidence in the case would show that Ellis used his power as CEO to order employees to make a list of vendors whose contracts with the county were valued at $100,000 or more so he could call them to solicit campaign contributions.
