Take control of your own career, associates. And partners, please do all that you can to let associates drive their own careers.
Some partners at my firm refer to associates as “partners in training.” Such a seemingly simple phrase captures many important messages for associates if they want to be successful lawyers—whether they want to become partners at their current firm, as many of us do, or are simply seeking experience before taking the next step in their careers.
