DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Mark Anthony Scott on Tuesday received the all-clear from the state ethics commission to raise campaign funds to pay off more than $63,000 he owes to the lawyer who defended him in a fight with the county district attorney over CEO Burrell Ellis’ criminal case.

Scott racked up more than $128,000 in legal fees last year defending himself from a suit brought by District Attorney Robert James to compel the judge to release a 2012 special purpose grand jury report. The report was controversial because it led to the criminal investigation and prosecution of Ellis, who has been suspended from office and is on trial for conspiracy and theft.
