Associates, particularly new associates, yearn and deserve feedback. Whether formally through an annual review process, or via informal comments and pointers offered during an assignment, partners should provide as much feedback to an associate as possible.
In law school, students typically receive feedback once a semester in each class in the form of a grade. With some exceptions for classes such as legal writing or practicums, students do not have an opportunity or a mechanism for receiving constructive feedback. With so much riding on law school, it is unfortunate and can be extremely unsettling for students.
