Columbus corporate lawyer Cecil Cheves, 65, ran his first long distance race—a 5K—when he was 45. It wasn’t long afterward that Cheves completed his first marathon of 26.2 miles and discovered a new passion for grueling tests of endurance and athleticism. Over the last 20 years, Cheves said he has run about 60 marathons, including 15 Ironman Triathlons.

In 2010, Cheves and some friends started the Soldier Marathon, which begins at Fort Benning and meanders along the Chattahoochee River through Columbus and Phenix City, Ala. About 2,000 people will run in this year’s Soldier Marathon on Nov. 8, an event that also includes a half-marathon, a 5K, and a 1-mile fun run.
