Terry Marlowe’s Fort Gaines law office occupies part of a building that 135 years ago was a saloon and music hall called Coleman’s Opera House. A stone’s throw away is the town’s original Frontier Village, that looks like it was built with Lincoln Logs on the banks of sprawling, sparkling Lake Walter F. George.

Most days Marlowe is not there. The office is locked. A note on the door gives a phone number and says the attorney is available by appointment evenings and weekends, plus Wednesdays and Fridays. But on a recent Wednesday, there was no sign of Marlowe.
