A Vidalia lawyer remained in the Toombs County Detention Center on Friday, facing charges of forgery and theft by conversion for secretly settling a medical malpractice case and pocketing the $500,000 the defendant paid to settle his clients’ claims.

Wilson R. Smith, 63, of Smith & Jenkins, which has offices in Vidalia and Savannah, was arrested Tuesday by Toombs County sheriff’s deputies pursuant to what a release from Toombs County Sheriff Alvie Kight Jr. said was an investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the office of Middle Circuit District Attorney Hayward Altman.
