The U.S. Justice Department has filed a rare statement of interest in a Fulton County case on behalf of juvenile criminal defendants claiming the state and Cordele Circuit judges failed to provide them with legal representation.

The 20-page statement filed March 13 makes a forceful case that, if the allegations made by attorneys for the Southern Center for Human Rights are accurate, juvenile defendants in the Cordele Circuit are “being systematically deprived of their constitutional right to counsel in the Cordele Judicial Circuit.”
