The state of Georgia has agreed to pay retroactive benefits to thousands of food stamp applicants who sued the state last year for failing to timely process applications, causing thousands of eligible families to go without the benefits.

The state Department of Human Services agreed to make the retroactive payments to settle a federal suit filed in Atlanta. The total value of the retroactive benefits the state would pay to resolve the case was not disclosed in settlement documents.
