A Marietta construction firm has agreed to pay $1 million to settle claims that it secured federal highway construction contracts by submitting false reports that one of its subcontractors qualified as a disadvantaged business, the acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia announced Monday.

In a separate settlement with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration, C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., which has secured large public construction contracts across the state, agreed to adopt an ethics code, establish a corporate compliance program, hire a compliance officer and retain an independent monitor, federal prosecutors said.
