A $145 million gap divides lawyers preparing for a courtroom battle Tuesday in Bainbridge over the case that led to a $150 million verdict for the parents of a 4-year-old boy who died in a Jeep Grand Cherokee when its gas tank exploded.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) argued in a recent brief that the Decatur County jury’s verdict was “grossly excessive” and that South Georgia Circuit Superior Court Judge J. Kevin Chason should reduce the award to no more than $5 million—$4 million for wrongful death and $1 million for pain and suffering—or void it and order a new trial.
