Jones Day’s 140-lawyer Atlanta office led the mergers and acquisitions team in the deal for Southern Co. to acquire AGL Resources for $12 billion, including $8 billion in debt.

Southern Co. and AGL Resources announced Monday that the boards of directors of both companies have approved a definitive merger agreement to create what will become the country’s leading electric and gas utility company, serving 9 million customers in nine states.
