Two Tennessee-based restaurant businesses have filed a potential class action against a major credit card payment processor and an affiliated marketer, claiming that the companies conspired to tack hidden charges and “junk fees” onto the bills merchants pay for allowing customers to use credit cards.

The businesses on Oct. 9 sued Alpharetta-based Global Payments Direct and Mercury Payment Systems of Durango, Colorado, in Fulton County Superior Court. The suit said Global claims to serve 1.5 million merchants in 29 countries and generates $2.6 billion in annual revenue. Mercury, it said, generated $237 million in 2013, and was sold for more than $1.6 billion last year.
