A federal judge on Thursday told lawyers for the state of Georgia and the U.S. Justice Department that, despite the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays, they must provide him with some answers by Jan. 6 for the state’s apparent failure to meet the terms of its 2010 landmark settlement over the care of its mentally ill and developmentally disabled citizens.
U.S. District Senior Judge Charles Pannell Jr. told state attorneys and federal civil rights lawyers at a hearing Thursday to report back with “a laundry list” of concrete plans the state can begin implementing immediately, as well as a list of disputes where the state and the Justice Department may remain at loggerheads. He also demanded a plan for what it will take to resolve the issues.
