One of the nation’s largest hospital chains has offered to pay $238 million to end a federal criminal investigation and a separate whistleblower suit involving allegations that four of its Georgia hospitals paid kickbacks to a chain of metro Atlanta prenatal clinics in return for patient referrals.

Tenet Healthcare Corp. on Monday notified shareholders that it has set aside $238 million to reflect an offer it said it made to the U.S. Justice Department and the state of Georgia on Feb. 18 that would resolve the criminal investigation and the civil litigation. The notification was included in Tenet’s annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
