In college sports, when a team breaks a rule, the penalty is often that the team must “vacate” one or more victories.
For example, in 2010, Ohio State’s football team went 12-1 and won its conference, the Big Ten. After the season, an NCAA investigation concluded that members of the football team traded autographs and memorabilia for cash and tattoos. As a self-imposed penalty, Ohio State vacated its 12 wins, ignoring the results on the gridiron and expunging the games from the school’s record.
