Fulton County Superior Court Judge Alford Dempsey Jr. has been named the court’s deputy chief judge, assuming the post formerly held by Judge T. Jackson Bedford Jr., who is leaving office at the end of the year. Dempsey’s new duties began June 1.

Dempsey, 69, has served on the superior court since his appointment by Gov. Zell Miller in 1995. During his tenure on the bench, Dempsey was the first judge to preside over the court’s Non-Complex Division, which deals with low-level felony cases; he was also among the first three judges assigned to the court’s Family Division. Dempsey currently chairs the court’s Technology Committee.
