The U.S. State Department ambassador leading the country’s global fight against human trafficking said that Pope Francis’ decision to convene summits to eradicate human trafficking is critical to attacking the practice globally.

“I can stand on a street corner and talk about anti-trafficking measures,” said Susan Coppedge, director of the State Department’s Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons and a senior advisor on trafficking to Secretary of State John Kerry. “But when Pope Francis talks about it, he has a megaphone that reaches around the world. He amplifies the message. He brings a moral component to it that motivates citizens and governments to act.
