The arrest of publisher Mark Thomason and his attorney led the Society for Professional Journalists on Wednesday to file a formal complaint against Appalachian Circuit chief Superior Court Judge Brenda Weaver with the state Judicial Qualifications Commission, which she heads.

The JQC considers ethics complaints against the state’s judges and recommends disciplinary action, when deemed necessary, for violations of the state Code of Judicial Conduct. The journalism society also filed a formal complaint with state Attorney General Sam Olens, who campaigned for the office in 2010 on a platform that he would strengthen the state’s open meetings and public records laws.
