The judge whose obscene argument with a defendant went viral has hired himself a lawyer and survived potential discipline in the wake of the exchange.

S. Lester Tate III of Akin & Tate in Cartersville negotiated the judge’s mea culpa to the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission, concluding with a letter from the commission “admonishing” the “improper verbal exchange.” Through the negotiation, Tate helped his client, Rome Judicial Circuit Judge J. Bryant Durham Jr., avoid any career-ending trouble, Tate said Monday he negotiated the terms and wording of the reprimand letter, which is expected to be published in Durham’s hometown newspaper, the Rome News-Tribune.
