In the predawn hours of Jan. 2, agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement pounded on the door of a metro Atlanta couple who were sheltering their 31-year-old Honduran niece and her 11-year-old son while they sought asylum in the U.S.
Federal agents claimed they were police looking for a criminal suspect they insisted lived at that address, according to a report by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They demanded entry without a warrant, and once inside, took the Honduran woman and her son into custody, even though she was wearing an ankle monitor and reporting regularly to ICE while her asylum application was pending, the report said.
