Facing at least one formal ethics complaint for her role in the felony indictment of a North Georgia publisher and his lawyer, the judge who chairs the state Judicial Qualifications Commission resigned from the agency on Friday.

Brenda Weaver, chief Superior Court judge of the Appalachian Circuit and chairwoman since April of the state judicial watchdog agency, announced her resignation in an email to her six fellow commission members. Weaver gave no reason for her resignation and did not reference the pending ethics complaint. But, she said, “The work of this commission is extremely important and nothing and no one should distract from its duties and responsibilities.”
