Nearly 20 mosques and Muslim organizations across Georgia are calling on the U.S. Justice Department to open a civil rights investigation of Newton County after the county commission voted Aug. 15 to block construction of a mosque.
In an email to John Horn, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Georgia in Atlanta, the executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) in Georgia singled out statements by Newton County commissioner John Douglas to a metro Atlanta newspaper.
