A citizen journalist arrested at a political rally at a north Georgia pumpkin farm two years ago as she recorded speeches by Republican candidates has sued the farm and owners Johnny and Kathy Burt for damages stemming from her arrest and what the suit describes as assault and battery by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy who was at the rally.

The suit was filed in Dawson County Superior Court the day before the second anniversary of journalist and videographer Nydia Tisdale’s August 2014 arrest in what has become known in political circles as “Pumpkingate.” The suit contends that Johnny Burt directed a Dawson County sheriff’s deputy to remove Tisdale from the rally while she was recording speeches by Republican candidates for office. The suit also claims that Burt later said he had approved of the off-duty deputy’s methods in carrying out his instructions.
