As World Suicide Prevention Day approaches on Sept. 10, we thought it would be appropriate to highlight efforts by members of the Georgia bar to prevent suicides by their fellow Georgia lawyers and to encourage others to commit to this effort.

The World Health Organization estimates that over 800,000 people die by suicide each year—that’s one person every 40 seconds—while up to 25 times as many attempt suicide. Lawyers are 3.6 times more likely to suffer depression compared with the average population, and lawyers rank fifth by occupation in the incidence of suicide.
