Civil rights and voters’ rights organizations on Wednesday sued the Georgia secretary of state in federal court in Atlanta, seeking to halt before the November elections what they say is a suppressive voter registration policy that requires an exact match of voter registrations with information contained in the state’s driver’s license and Social Security databases.

“Under this crude policy, voters’ registration applications are not processed and eligible voters are not added to voter rolls if certain identifying information on voter registration forms does not match exactly information contained in state databases,” said Kristen Clarke, president and executive director of the Washington-based Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
