Just a month before voters decide on a constitutional amendment that, if approved, would abolish the state judicial watchdog agency and give the state Legislature sole authority to remake it, a coalition of citizens and nonpartisan organizations has formed to combat the amendment’s passage.
Georgians for Judicial Integrity—a coalition that includes Common Cause of Georgia, the Southern Center for Human Rights, The Georgia NAACP, the ACLU of Georgia, Lambda Legal and others—on Tuesday launched a campaign to defeat Amendment Three, calling it a “blatant political power grab” that would replace the state Judicial Qualifications Commission, now a constitutionally independent judicial oversight and disciplinary agency, with one vulnerable to political pressure. The coalition also unveiled a website, www.GeorgiaJudges.org to educate the public about the proposed constitutional amendment and its intent to defeat it.
