The U.S. Department of Justice awarded a $250,000 grant to the Fulton County Superior Court as part of its “Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program,” under which a mental health task force will create and implement strategies to reduce the number of mentally ill inmates in the Fulton County Jail.

According to an Oct. 3 release announcing the grant, the Justice and Mental Health Task Force will partner with the county’s judges, sheriff, corrections experts and treatment providers to launch a coordinated effort modeled on a national program, “Stepping Up the Initiative,” aimed at identifying adults with mental illness and substance abuse problems for treatment.
