The FBI has arrested a southwest Georgia county sheriff on federal charges of selling stolen firearms, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced Friday.

Miller County Sheriff Shane Rathel, 42, was taken into custody Friday and charged with the illegal firearms sales after a defendant facing felony charges who surrendered his guns to the sheriff last spring spotted two of his guns in a local pawn shop, according to U.S. Attorney G.F. “Pete” Peterman and an FBI agent’s affidavit supporting the criminal complaint against Rathel. If convicted, the sheriff could face a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
