By a margin of nearly 2 to 1, Georgia voters on Tuesday passed a constitutional amendment that will profoundly change the state’s 40-year-old judicial watchdog agency by stripping it of its constitutional independence.

Amendment 3, which abolishes the state Judicial Qualifications Commission and gives the state legislature sole authority to remake it and control its governance, passed 2,323,528 to 1,395,584 or 62.48 percent to 37.52 percent, according to unofficial results tallied by the Georgia Secretary of State.
