Georgia Power will pay more than $1.5 million to settle litigation filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission on behalf of two-dozen employees and job applicants who claimed the power company fired them or rescinded offers of employment because of medical disabilities which their physicians had attested would not affect their ability to perform their jobs, the federal agency announced Tuesday.
The settlement resolves a three-year-old suit that accused Georgia Power of violating federal anti-discrimination laws. The settlement resolves claims for back pay with interest, compensatory and punitive damages. The settlement does not include any admissions by the power company that it violated federal anti-discrimination laws.
