A jury awarded $525,000 to a woman injured when an Emanuel County sheriff’s deputy ran a stop sign and hit her SUV. The deputy was on duty but was not en route to an emergency and did not have his emergency equipment activated at the time of the 2011 wreck.

Macon solo James Freeman, attorney for plaintiff Michelle Howard, said the county had declined an $850,000 offer to settle and repeated requests for mediation, offering $200,000 shortly before trial.
