When the widow of a man murdered outside his College Park condominium was awarded $3.2 million by a Fulton County jury, her lawyers already knew that at least half the judgment would never be collected: 50 percent of the liability was apportioned to three men in prison for the slaying.

Liability for the remaining half, $1,625,000, was equally apportioned on the verdict form between the condo association and the complex’s defunct security company, which never entered an appearance and was declared in default.
